Maybe Grumpy Cat was venting his frustration over Johnny Depp‘s hat? The Transcendence star presented the Best Movie trophy at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, April 13, in a partially-torn, raggedy old hat that looked… well, shabby.

Why the newly-engaged actor, 50, chose a torn hat from his large collection of toppers remains a mystery. Equally puzzling was his shout-out to rapper Wiz Khalifa as he took to the stage before screaming fans.

“I want to thank Wiz Khalifa for the transportation,” Depp said of the “Black and Yellow” hitmaker, before presenting the Best Movie trophy to cast members of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

It turns out that the two actually met backstage while taping Jimmy Kimmel Live! last Tuesday, April 8. The rapper posted an Instagram pic from their encounter and shared, “Met Johnny Depp yesterday. It wuz awesome.”

Depp also sported his “female engagement ring” — the actor’s most recent unusual sartorial statement prior to his torn hat — while presenting the award Sunday before the show ended. The Lone Ranger star previously told David Letterman of the item that it was “too big” for his fiancee Amber Heard. “She is wearing the other one,” Depp said.
